Sign Two Vieques Petitions

Provide adequate resources to address the health crisis in Vieques and fully clean up the island  by Roots Action.
 

 

TAKE ACTION ON BEHALF OF THE UNITED STATES CITIZENS OF THE ISLAND OF VIEQUES, PUERTO RICO

We, the US Citizens of Vieques, are extremely sick with Cancer, Diabetes, Cirrhosis, & Hypertension caused by the military’s environmental contamination since WWII. Thousands have died & will die from the heavy metals, agent orange, napalm, & other toxic compounds found on the Island. We have claims against the Secretary of Health for the negligent science & damaging conclusions reached by the ATSDR. We need a hospital, a research center to understand the effects of the toxins, & compensation to rebuild our lives. We must address the critical health issues, the environmental contamination, & the economic & property injustice suffered by the Citizens. Please instruct the Secretary of Health to settle our claims & work with us to solve this crisis & save our children.

Congratulations to Vieques en Rescate

This weekend (January 23-24, 2016), Vieques en Rescate held a free acupuncture clinic at their offices.  Dozens of residents received treatment with priority for cancer patients.

VER has registered more than 100 cancer patients in our small island of 9,000 residents. Patients receive free services such as medical supplies, transportation, etc.  Our cancer mortality rate is higher than most other places in PR perhaps because of the lack of health services, the military contamination, among other factors. Below are the buttons we made in memory of our cancer victims.

PARA QUIÉN SERÁ BARRIO ESPERANZA?

Esta semana el Municipio propuso repentinamente un gran cambio a la zonificación del Barrio Esperanza. Pretende crear un distrito “Mixto de Baja Densidad” en Esperanza que permitiría usos RESIDENCIAL Y COMERCIAL donde ahora solamente está permitida residencias. Esto significa que tiendas, venta de comida, oficinas, HOTELES, etc. se pueden construir a lado de residencias existentes sin requerir vista pública. (nota: el 25 de enero la JP negaron que van a permitir hoteles en este distrito pero no tienen nuevos reglamentos donde dice eso.)

Es posible que este cambio sea agradable a los residentes de Esperanza. Pero los residentes debe tener la oportunidad de comentar sobre estos cambios. Desde abril 2015 hasta ahora, el propuesto Plan Territorial, incluyo el mapa de Esperanza como “Residencial Intermedia”. Es una gran decepción presentar en el último momento un cambio tan significativo para el futuro del Barrio de Esperanza.

Entendemos que Esperanza ya es un área turística. Queremos mantenerla como una comunidad sustentable. ¿Queremos tener negocios, como en el malecón, por todo el barrio? ¿Quién se beneficiará con estos cambios? ¿Esta zonificación “Mixto” disminuye o aumenta el desplazamiento de viequenses del barrio? ¿Aumentará la especulación?  ¿Porque la comunidad de Esperanza no fue consultada antes de hacer estos cambios?

Es posible que este miércoles, 27 de enero, a las 6 PM, en la Alcaldía, la Legislatura Municipal votará sobre el Plan Territorial. Luego, de ser aprobado, va a la Fortaleza para la firma del Gobernador.

For whom will the Barrio Esperanza be for?

This week the Municipality suddenly proposed a major change to the zoning of Barrio Esperanza. It aims to create a “mixed low-density district” in Esperanza which will allow RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL USES whereas now only residences are permitted. This means that shops selling food, offices, hotels, etc. can be built next to existing homes without requiring public hearings.

 

It is possible that this change would be acceptable to the residents of Esperanza. But residents should have the opportunity to comment on these changes. From April 2015 until now, the proposed Territorial Plan, included a map of Esperanza showing it as  “Residential Intermediate”. It is a great disappointment to present at the last moment changes so significant for the future of Barrio de Esperanza.

 

We understand that Esperanza is already a tourist area. We want to keep it as a sustainable community. Do we want to have businesses, like on the Malecon, throughout the neighborhood? Who will benefit from these changes? Why is the municipality abandoning the goals of the Master Plan which promulgates small guest houses that create more jobs than big hotels? Does this “Mixed” zoning decrease or increase the displacement of Viequenses from the neighborhood? Will it increase the speculation? Why was the Esperanza community not consulted before making these changes?

 

It is possible that this Wednesday, January 27, at 6 pm, at City Hall, the Municipal Legislature vote on the Territorial Plan. Then, if approved, it will go to San Juan for the Governor’s signature.
